A hipótese de ser português assenta na colocação da sua cantiga nos apógrafos italianos, numa zona onde predominam autores portugueses. De resto, crê Resende de Oliveira que será um trovador de finais do século XIII, eventualmente identificável com um Raimundo Gonçalves, documentado no Porto em 1288. O facto de só sabermos o seu patronímico e não o seu nome da família não facilita, no entanto, a sua identificação."
