Terms of Use and Privacy Policy
For the Núcleo de Pesquisas em Informática, Literatura e Linguística (NUPILL) of the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), privacy and security are priorities and we are committed to transparency in the processing of our users/clients' personal data. Therefore, this present Privacy Policy establishes how the collection, use and transfer of information from clients or other people who access or use our site is carried out.
By using our services, you understand that we will collect and use your personal information in the ways described in this Policy, under the norms of Data Protection (LGPD, Brazilian Federal Law 13.709/2018), the consumer provisions of Federal Law 8078/1990 and the other applicable norms of the Brazilian legal system.
In this way, the Núcleo de Pesquisas em Informática, Literatura e Linguística, hereinafter simply referred to as "NUPILL", in the role of Data Controller, is bound by the provisions of this Privacy Policy.
1. What data do we collect about you and for what purpose?
Our site, on the user's own initiative, collects and uses some of your personal data in order to enable the provision of services and improve the user experience.
1.1. Personal data provided by the data subject
Full name and email for creating the site account necessary for the use of the following services:
- Use of the digital annotation tool, allowing you to annotate works in HTML format;
- Participate in discussion forums (comments) associated with works and writers
- Export data to external linguistic analysis tools
- Receive recommendation and search reordering services based on the user profile
1.2. Personal data collected automatically
When the user authenticates on the site, the system collects the access history to literary works, to obtain the user's preferences in terms of writers and literary genres.
2. How do we collect your data?
The collection of your personal data is carried out at the time of creating the user registration. It is important to inform that creating an account on the site is not mandatory.
2.1. Consent
It is from your consent that we process your personal data. Consent is the free, informed and unequivocal manifestation by which you authorize NUPILL to process your data.
Thus, in accordance with the Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados (Brazilian General Data Protection Law - LGPD), your data will only be collected, processed and stored upon prior and express consent.
Your consent will be obtained specifically for each purpose described above, evidencing NUPILL's commitment to transparency and good faith towards its users/clients, following the relevant legislative regulations.
By using NUPILL services and providing your personal data, you are aware of and consent to the provisions of this Privacy Policy, in addition to knowing your rights and how to exercise them.
At any time and at no cost, you may revoke your consent.
It is important to highlight that the revocation of consent for data processing may imply the impossibility of adequate performance of some functionality of the site that depends on the operation. Such consequences will be reported in advance.
3. What are your rights?
NUPILL ensures its users/clients their data subject rights provided for in article 18 of the Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados. Thus, you may, free of charge and at any time:
- Confirm the existence of data processing, in a simplified manner or in a clear and complete format.
- Access your data, being able to request it in a legible copy in printed form or by electronic, secure and suitable means.
- Correct your data, by requesting its editing, correction or updating.
- Limit your data when unnecessary, excessive or processed in non-compliance with legislation through anonymization, blocking or deletion.
- Request the portability of your data, through a registration data report that NUPILL handles about you.
- Eliminate your data processed based on your consent, except in the cases provided for by law.
- Revoke your consent, deauthorizing the processing of your data.
- Be informed about the possibility of not providing your consent and the consequences of denial.
4. How can you exercise your data subject rights?

In order to guarantee your correct identification as data subject of the personal data subject to the request, we may request documents or other proofs that may prove your identity. In this hypothesis, you will be informed in advance.
5. How and for how long will your data be stored?
Your personal data collected by NUPILL will be used and stored for the time necessary for the provision of the service or for the purposes listed in this Privacy Policy to be achieved, considering the rights of data subjects and controllers.
In general, your data will be kept while the contractual relationship between you and NUPILL lasts. Once the period of storage of personal data has ended, they will be excluded from our databases or anonymized, except for the hypotheses legally provided for in article 16 of the Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados, list:
- compliance with legal or regulatory obligation by the controller;
- study by a research body, ensuring, whenever possible, the anonymization of personal data;
- transfer to a third party, provided that the data processing requirements set out in this Law are respected; or
- exclusive use of the controller, prohibited access by third parties, and provided that the data are anonymized.
That is, personal information about you that is essential for compliance with legal, judicial and administrative determinations and/or for the exercise of the right of defense in judicial and administrative proceedings will be kept, regardless of the deletion of the other data.
The storage of data collected by NUPILL reflects our commitment to the security and privacy of your data. We employ technical protection measures and solutions capable of guaranteeing the confidentiality, integrity and inviolability of your data. In addition, we also have security measures appropriate to the risks and with access control to the stored information.
6. What do we do to keep your data secure?
To keep your personal information secure, we use physical, electronic and managerial tools oriented to the protection of your privacy.
We apply these tools taking into account the nature of the personal data collected, the context and purpose of the processing and the risks that any violations would generate for the rights and freedoms of the subject of the data collected and processed.
Among the measures we adopt, we highlight the following:
- Only authorized persons have access to your personal data
- Access to your personal data is made only after a confidentiality commitment
- Your personal data is stored in a secure and suitable environment.
NUPILL undertakes to adopt the best practices to avoid security incidents. However, it is necessary to highlight that no virtual page is entirely secure and free from risks. It is possible that, despite all our security protocols, problems caused exclusively by third parties may occur, such as cyber attacks by hackers, or also as a result of the negligence or imprudence of the user/client themselves.
In case of security incidents that may generate risk or relevant damage to you or any of our users/clients, we will communicate to those affected and to the Autoridade Nacional de Proteção de Dados (Brazilian National Data Protection Authority) about what occurred, in line with the provisions of the Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados.
7. With whom can your data be shared?
With a view to preserving your privacy, NUPILL will not share your personal data with any third party.
These receive your data only to the extent necessary for the provision of the contracted services and our contracts are guided by the data protection norms of the Brazilian legal system.

In addition, there are also other hypotheses in which your data may be shared, which are:
- Legal determination, requirement, request or court order, with judicial, administrative or competent governmental authorities.
- Case of corporate movements, such as merger, acquisition and incorporation, automatically.
- Protection of NUPILL's rights in any type of conflict, including those of judicial content.
7.1. International data transfer
Some of the third parties with whom we share your data may be located or have facilities located in foreign countries. Under these conditions, in any case, your personal data will be subject to the Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados and the other Brazilian data protection laws.
In this sense, NUPILL commits to always adopt efficient cybersecurity and data protection standards, in its best efforts to ensure and comply with legislative requirements.
By agreeing to this Privacy Policy, you agree to this sharing, which will take place according to the purposes described in this instrument.
8. Cookies or navigation data
For its operation, this site makes use of Cookies, which are text files sent by the platform to your computer and stored on it, that contain information related to navigation on the site. In short, Cookies are used to improve the user experience.

NUPILL provides for the responsibility of the agents that act in the data processing processes, in accordance with articles 42 to 45 of the Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados.
We undertake to keep this Privacy Policy up to date, observing its provisions and ensuring its compliance.
In addition, we also undertake the commitment to seek technical and organizational conditions safely able to protect the entire data processing process.
If the Autoridade Nacional de Proteção de Dados requires the adoption of measures in relation to the data processing carried out by NUPILL, we undertake to follow them.
10.1 Disclaimer of liability
As mentioned in Topic 6, although we adopt high security standards to avoid incidents, there is no virtual page entirely free from risks. In this sense, NUPILL is not responsible for:
- Any consequences arising from the negligence, imprudence or incompetence of users in relation to their individual data. We guarantee and are responsible only for the security of the data processing processes and compliance with the purposes described in this instrument. We highlight that the responsibility regarding the confidentiality of access data is the user's.
- Malicious actions by third parties, such as hacker attacks, except if culpable or deliberate conduct by NUPILL is proven. We highlight that in case of security incidents that may generate risk or relevant damage to you or any of our users/clients, we will communicate to those affected and to the Autoridade Nacional de Proteção de Dados about what occurred and will fulfill the necessary measures.
- Untruthfulness of the information entered by the user/client in the records necessary for the use of NUPILL services; any consequences arising from false information or information entered in bad faith are entirely the responsibility of the user/client.
